ALFRED WILK

Warsaw, 19 August 1947. A member of the District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Warsaw, Acting Judge Halina Wereńko, heard the person named below as an unsworn witness. Having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the obligation to tell the truth, the witness testified as follows:

Name and surname Alfred Wilk
Parents’ names Franciszek and Eleonora, née Więckowska
Date of birth 10 May 1910, in Łódź
Religious affiliation Roman Catholic
Place of residence Warsaw, Jaworzyńska Street 7, flat 7
Education public school
Occupation investigative officer at the Citizen’s Militia main headquarters

I stayed at the concentration camp in Auschwitz from 14 June 1940 until 20 January 1945.

I don’t recall the name Kraus. In the photograph shown to me (the witness was shown a photograph of Franz Xaver Kraus, sent with the letter from 4 August 1947, no. 735/47 from the District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Kraków), I don’t recognize this functionary of the camp in Auschwitz. I don’t think I know the person shown in the photograph.

As to the question of whether I was present when Sturmbahnführer SS Kraus shot several Muslims in the camp kitchen in January 1945, I respond that, in fact, I was not present during that incident, but I heard that such an incident took place. I heard that, having shot several Muslims, the Sturmbahnführer SS (I don’t remember if it was Kraus, but I do remember that it was the Lagerkommendant from Birkenau) supposedly threatened that he would shoot Szelest and demanded to know where he was at that moment. I also heard that Egersdörfer often defended Szelest.

I know that the Lagerkommendant from Birkenau often came to see Lagerkommendant Hössler in Auschwitz.

I don’t know if the Lagerkommendant from Birkenau especially harassed Szelest and wanted him transported to Mauthausen, however it is possible. I only saw the Lagerkommendant from Birkenau from afar, so I cannot say what he looked like. I heard from my colleagues from Birkenau that the Lagerkommendant was a sadist and that I should stay away from him, but I cannot give any precise facts about his criminal activity. I think that engineer Plaskura (currently residing in Auchwitz at 3 Maja Street) should know more about the Lagerkommendant from Birkenau. He was the kapo of the engineers in Auschwitz and often had to meet him due to his function. Moreover, there is Czesław Jaszczyński (currently residing in Wałbrzych Sobiesin, Wolności Streer 4), who was a janitor in Auschwitz.

Alfred Barabasz (currently residing in Katowice, at the same street where Park 3 Maja is situated – I don’t know the exact address; he is a chauffeur) might testify about the murder of the Muslims in the camp kitchen.

Anyway, I recall that several Muslims from the camp kitchen were murdered after the camp had been evacuated. Szelest, Barabasz, and I, together with a group of other prisoners, stayed at the camp, hiding from the authorities.

At this the report was concluded and read out.
