From the photos of the former members of the Auschwitz crew, I recognize Hans Hoffman. I know him from 1940 from the concentration camp in Dachau, where he was the Rapportführer [report leader] and later the Lagerführer [camp leader].

In the spring of 1942, two transports of Soviet POWs arrived in the Dachau camp. At that time I was working in the Tonnaulehrer [?] kommando, which transported garbage from the camp. One day, we were ordered to collect the grass that had been mown on the embankments outside the camp in the immediate vicinity of the so-called Schisestand [shooting range]. Then I saw mass executions being carried out – the Soviet prisoners of war were being shot. Hoffmann played an active role in this. I personally saw him shooting.

In 1940, shortly after arriving at the camp, I was subjected to a re-interrogation conducted by the Gestapo at the Political Department, in which Hoffman played an active role. At that time I was severely injured all over the body as a result of the beatings (broken teeth, and to this day I still have injuries (holes) to the head and the whole body). Hoffman also did the beating at that time. At the beginning of 1941, when we were returning from work with our column (the column consisted mainly of Germans – Garagenbau [construction of garages]), Hoffman picked out five Poles from among us and took us to the hospital where we were examined “for the benefit of the aviation department” (Luftwaffe). We were then subjected to tests in high and low pressure cabins. This has a negative effect on the functioning of the lungs and heart. I know that in 1943 Hoffman was transferred to another camp near Munich – Allach (a branch of Dachau). What became of him later, I don’t know.

I would like to give the names of other prisoners who may be able to testify in Hoffman’s case: Aleksander Śniady (I will give his address by phone), Liwski, Nowy Dwór near Warsaw.

I know Hoffman by name and I certainly recognized him in the photo. It is possible that he was transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The report was read out.
