My wartime experience
By the end of July 1944, the Soviet army arrived, and on one Sunday morning, a battle broke out in Wisznice, as the Soviets fought the Germans. The Germans set up landmines on the bridges when they were retreating, and burned down houses, barracks and barns. I was in the forest at the time, picking berries and mushrooms. Then I went to my aunt and we sat in a shelter throughout the battle. After a few hours, the battle was over. We went to her place and watched the Soviet troops. We spent all week there, then we went home. The war, which started in 1939 and ended [in] 1945, was truly horrifying to me.
