[Warsaw], 1 March 1945
On 2 August 1944, three German trucks passed along Aleje Jerozolimskie under constant fire from insurgents grouped on the premises of the railway workshops on Chmielna Street, opposite the Central Station. Employees of the Municipal Department of Sanitation – some wounded, some already dead – had been tied to the fenders of those cars. The victims had their hands and legs tied. The hats, which indicated that the victims were of Polish origin, were secured with scarves in such a way that none who witnessed that game could have any doubts as to whether the victims were Poles.
